Jan Vertonghen is set to turn his back on a possible move to Barcelona by signing a new deal at Tottenham, according to MirrorFootball.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane all summer, with Barcelona touted as the front-runners for his signature.

But the 27-year-old has revealed his intentions to stay with the North London club by signing a new £60,000-a-week deal.

He said: “It goes without saying that I would like to stay at Tottenham.

“I still had a four-year contract but I see that they have offered me a new five-year contract as a great sign of confidence.”

Vertonghen returns to Spurs’ pre-season training this week but is set to have tests on an ankle problem picked up in the World Cup.

“I walked into the World Cup match against Argentina with an ankle injury,” he confirmed.

“But I want to treat it carefully, because last season I was suffering from one injury to another, I definitely want to avoid that.”
