Jan Vertonghen believes that Capital One Cup glory could be just what Tottenham need to overcome their recently talked about mental fragility, according to the London Evening Standard.

Spurs booked their spot in the last eight of the competition last night with a 2-0 win over Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion, and will take on Newcastle in the next round.

With the club having not won a trophy for six years – the League Cup under Harry Redknapp – manager Maurico Pochettino has been speaking about his team’s mental block on the biggest stage of late, and Vertonghen feels that silverware could be the ideal remedy at White Hart Lane:

“One hundred per cent, It gives a bit of belief that we can do big things with the team and I think it would help us.” He said when quizzed on the situation.

“We have a lot of good players but sometimes you just need it to click and I hope we find it now — in the Capital One Cup. We are in the quarter-finals and hopefully we can force something.

“When I was at Ajax [before joining Spurs in the summer of 2012], the club went through a period of not winning a trophy and you lose a bit of belief that you’re capable of it.

“But then we won the Dutch Cup in 2010 and after that we won the league twice in a row before I left. Ajax won it the following two years, too, so when you win one trophy, you start believing that you can do it again.”

Spurs also have a shot at Europa League success after making a solid start to the competition with one win and two draws in Group C.
