Despite the appearance of Ryan Mason, Tottenham are still believed to be searching for a central midfielder to partner Nabil Bentaleb.

Paulinho and Dembele have both been linked with moves away with neither setting the world alight in their time at Spurs and Stambouli has looked limited in his few appearances last season.

Since the spending spree in the wake of Gareth Bale’s sale to Real Madrid, Tottenham have been looking for a balance to their side after the disappointment of so many signings.

None of the players brought in to fill the space of Modric or Parker have lived up to their previous reputations and it is time for Spurs to delve into the central midfield market again...

Steven N’Zonzi

Steven N'Zonzi

Fresh from a 'derisory' offer from Sevilla, N’Zonzi has made it clear that he wants out from the Brittania stadium.

Available at a cut price, the Frenchman offers a complete game that is capable of mixing up physicality with some tidy passing in the centre.

His 85% pass completion from last season would team well with Bentaleb and create a solid base for Eriksen to work in front of them and create.

Yohan Cabaye

Yohan Cabaye

Cabaye’s big move to Paris has been a damp squib and the Frenchman looks to be on the move this summer.

Cabaye offers versatility for whoever he signs with, able to play alongside Bentaleb in a 4-2-3-1 or as more of a box-to-box in a 4-3-3, he can even work as the more advanced midfield player.

When a clear out of the squad at Spurs looks likely, Cabaye’s versatility would be immensely valuable and provides a goal threat that many of the others do not.

Alex Song

Alex Song

After his successful loan spell at West Ham, Song is available on a permanent transfer from Barcelona.

Although a former Gunner may not be a popular addition, Song offers a physicality that other Spurs midfielders have looked short of.

Song would allow Bentaleb greater freedom to go forward and ideally provide a stronger shield in front of the sometimes open Tottenham back line.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Schneiderlin4

Schneiderlin is unquestionably the flavour of the month at the moment.

The Southampton midfielder has been linked with most of the top half and was apparently very close to linking up with Pochettino last summer.

Another stellar season would make Schneiderlin a slightly more costly addition to the midfield, but reads the game the best of all other options and would be quite a coup if Spurs were to add him to their squad.

James McCarthy

James McCarthy (Everton)

As Everton recover from an underwhelming season, McCarthy would likely be open to a move to Tottenham.

His exceptional work rate and average of over 2.5 tackles per game a game makes him a great option if looking to break up play, but would not offer the creativity from deep that some of the other alternatives would do.
