Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has apologised for their incredible collapse against Newcastle United on Sunday, in which his side lost 5-1 to the relegated club.

The Lilywhites were chasing Leicester City for the title a few weeks ago, but following their 2-2 draw against Chelsea, which made the Foxes champions, Pochettino’s men have lost two games on the trot to finish below north London rivals Arsenal once again.

The result has left supporters livid, especially as, with the game at 2-1, Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off.

And Pochettino revealed that the thumping by the Magpies was the worst result of his managerial career, and had nothing to say but sorry to all of the fans while citing his players’ loss of motivation as the reason behind their poor performance.

“I think after Chelsea, [defeat to] Southampton was an accident but it wasn’t because the mentality we showed was a shame and we need to accept that." he is quoted by talkSPORT.

“I want to apologise to our supporters and our families too because it was a shame what happened on the pitch.

“To finish in the Champions League and to finish second after a lot of time [would have been good] and with the last few games we put it in the bin.

“It’s difficult to understand because all the season we showed character. Our supporters and families felt very proud of how we played. But today we were the opposite we played like a team who didn’t care about anything.

“Maybe after Chelsea and losing the race for the title it was difficult to keep [our energy] and they started to think about individual issues.

"I think today we showed that this wasn't a team that had played well through the whole season, and I think this was my worst day as a manager in England or Spain.”
