Roma are eyeing a summer deal for unsettled Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, according to reports from Il Messaggero.

The Spurs centre-back was one of the stars of the 2012/13 campaign as the London club narrowly missed out on a top four finish, but he has struggled this term amid rumours that he is thinking about leaving.

The Belgian is said to be desperate for Champions League action, and has already confessed that he will be forced to evaluate his options if the Lilywhites cannot match his aims.

With Tottenham extremely unlikely to break into the top four this term, a move away from White Hart Lane is likely, and Roma have been alerted.

The Italian giants are believed to have made Vertonghen a top target heading into the summer, with sporting director Walter Sabatini alleged to have met with the 26-year-old’s agent on at least two occasions.

Spurs are thought to be desperate to keep their 2012 signing but the club are aware that if he is unhappy they may have to cash in.

Vertonghen is expected to feature for Belgium at the World Cup, which may increase interest in his services.

What do you think?

Spurs must keep Vertonghen
