Italian giants Roma have set their sights on Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, according to talkSPORT.

Vertonghen is reportedly ready to consider his future in the summer, should Tottenham fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

The 54-cap Belgian international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders since moving from Ajax in the summer of 2012.

He was named in the PFA team of the year during his first season in England.

The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Barcelona have already been linked with a summer move, and now it seems Serie A giants Rome have also registered their interest.

Roma have lost just once in 24 Serie A matches this season, and are well on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

That means they will be looking to strengthen their defence in the summer, and the lure of playing in Europe’s elite competition may be too good an opportunity for Vertonghen to turn down.

Roma have also been linked with a move for Cagliari and former Southampton and Manchester United target Davide Astori, but see Vertonghen as a better alternative.
