Southampton are ready to call off their pursuit of Andros Townsend if Tottenham demand a swap deal for Morgan Schneiderlin, according to reports from the Southern Daily Echo.

The Saints are understood to be interested in Spurs’ 23-year-old England international, with Ronald Koeman desperate to bulk out his inherited squad after the sakes of big name players such as Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert.

An offer of around £10m is expected to be submitted by the South Coast club, but there are fears that the Lilywhites may look to use the situation to pull off a deal for Schneiderlin.

The French midfielder is thought to be Mauricio Pochettino’s top target, with the Argentine desperate to set up a reunion with the player he coached last season at St Mary’s Stadium.

But reports suggest that Southampton are not willing to budge on their stance that the 24-year-old will not be the seventh high profile name to leave the club this summer, and will rebuff any attempt at a cash plus Townsend move from Tottenham.

The fleet-footed Spurs winger is very much on the fringes of the first XI at White Hart Lane after an injury hit 2013/14 campaign, and has also been linked with QPR.
