Spurs defender talks up his potential

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan VertonghenTottenham Hotspur defender and Belgium international Jan Vertonghen says that Premier League fans have yet to see the best of him, according to TalkSport.

Vowing to improve on an impressive first six months in English football, Vertonghen hopes to help his teammates grab a Champions League place come the end of the season.

Joining the North London club in the summer after being named Dutch Player of the Year for 2012, Vertonghen has excited fans both at left-back and in his preferred role in the heart of defence.

Starting 26 games this season, Vertonghen has certainly asserted his right to play in the centre of the Spurs defence despite stiff competition from Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Steven Caulker. With Younes Kaboul yet to come back from injury, Vertonghen won’t be prepared to make way for a man who many believe to be Spurs’ missing link this season.

“I think I’ve done okay, but you haven’t seen my best yet. I think I can improve,” said Vertonghen, appraising his season so far.

“I wanted to be ready when I came to the Premier League and I felt ready when I came to Tottenham.

“I’m happy with my first six months, played a lot of games, feel the confidence of the players, staff and supporters as well.

“After six months, I think I can be happy with my performances. The fans have been very supportive, I love them as well!”
