Tottenham have identified FC Basel defender Fabian Schar as an ideal alternative to Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio, according to MirrorFootball.
The north London club looked close to bringing Musacchio to White Hart Lane this summer but were eventually scared off by problems with third-party ownership and Villarreal’s £40million valuation of the defender.
And new manager Mauricio Pochettino has turned his attention to 22-year-old Switzerland international Schar, who is believed to be valued at around £12million.
Spurs director of football Franco Baldini watched Schar feature in Basel’s league meeting with Sion last week and is was impressed enough to give Daniel Levy the green light to open up negotiations for the defender.
Schare broke in to the Swiss national side last year and featured in this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
