So far this summer we have seen Morgan Schneiderlin earn a big money move to Manchester United, after impressing in a vibrant Southampton side. Now, his former partner in crime Victor Wanyama is being linked with his own move away.

With Tottenham Hotspur reported to be lurking, the 24-year old may link up with his former boss Maurico Pochettino in North London. Spurs have had a frustrating opening three weeks of the season, and signing the former Celtic man can address huge issues in the Lilywhites’ engine room.

Though he is not as adept as the new Manchester United midfielder in possession, Wanyama has had an equally large role in the party down on the South Coast. The Kenyan international operates as far more of a ‘destroyer’ than the elegant Frenchman, but is not simply one dimensional. His arrival at White Hart Lane will add much needed steel to the Argentine’s side.

With Eric Dier currently pairing either one of Nabil Bentaleb or Ryan Mason as the two holding midfielders, it is clear that Spurs lack a player in the mould of their transfer target. Though Dier is a talent, he is much more comfortable playing as a centre back, and lacks Wanyama’s industry.

Imaging a Tottenham side with the Southampton man slotting next to Bentaleb makes for exciting times in North London. His all-action approach would free up his potential team-mate to act as a more creative influence, even opening up the possibility of deploying Moussa Dembele there.

More creativity can be afforded to the side should the Kenyan captain make the move. His tough tackling has earned Premier League plaudits. The short, simple and precise passes to the more sophisticated players in the side will no doubt endear him to any fans. Crucially, he is capable of popping up with important goals.

A stunning 40 yard effort last year earned the Saints all three points in an otherwise drab game against Hull last year, and I’m sure most people know about that Celtic-Barcelona clash by now.

Perhaps comparisons to Arsenal are not the most apt when talking about their bitter North London rivals, but the Carzola-Coquelin axis in play at the Emirates can act as a precedent in this potential tactic. Where Coquelin bites, barks and bullies the opposition to recover possession or break down attacks, the silky Spaniard provides the incisive passes from deep.

Wanyama acting as a Coquelin would work wonders for Spurs, who have looked a little lightweight in the holding midfield positions. The Kenyan is a much better player than the Frenchman, and can truly help Pochettino’s men become a force to be reckoned with.

With a move for Saido Beharino also said to be the cards, the energy both provide can spark Spurs’ season.
