With less than a week left in the summer transfer window, Tottenham will hope to address some of their problem areas before the opportunity to sign new players passes by.

There will also be a number of other players that could leave White Hart Lane this summer, with the future of long-serving winger Aaron Lennon certainly a point of contention.

The former England international has been ostracised at the North London club since the arrival of manager Mauricio Pochettino last summer, with the flying wideman relegated to fringe figure status.

At the time of writing, it looks for all money that Lennon will leave Tottenham before the window closes next week but there is certainly a case to suggest that the former Leeds United man deserves another opportunity at White Hart Lane.

Lennon’s limitations have been criticised by the Spurs supporters in the past, with the diminutive flyer’s hot-and-cold delivery and lack of a final product frustrating the club’s fans over time.

That said, Spurs have issues to address on the right-hand side of their midfield, with the position not having a viable option in the role since Lennon was at his best.

Erik Lamela has been used in this position over the last two years intermittently, but the expensive Argentine has failed to live up to the sizeable reputation he had upon arriving in North London.

With a lack of real pace and coughing up possession much too freely, it appears that the former Roma starlet is not cut out for English football and could well see his future elsewhere if Spurs decide to cut their losses on him.

Andros Townsend is another that has been used by Pochettino in the right wing role, but represents a figure of major frustration for the Spurs fans.

Although the former QPR loanee introduced himself to the Tottenham first team in spectacular fashion, his performances over the last 12 months for the club have been very ordinary.

The issue is that both players are left-footed but operate on their unnatural side, meaning that their first instinct is to cut in-field and move onto their stronger side.

This has the knock-on effect of cramping Spurs’ play centrally and denying the team an out-ball or width.

The hope is that new signing Clinton N’jie will fulfil the role, while promising youngster Alex Pritchard will also be in the running for the position once he is fit and available again.

The problem with both of these players is their lack of Premier League experience and the fact they will most likely need time to adjust to the English top flight.

With Lennon showing last season on loan at Everton that he still had what it takes to cut it in the Premier League, discarding this able winger could well be a mistake; his reinstatement would at least offer Spurs much-needed width.

However, with players such as Lamela and Townsend given opportunities to play in the Tottenham first team, bringing Lennon back and moving on one or both of these ineffective widemen certainly would not be the worst choice currently.
