The Romanian defender only joined Tottenham from Steaua Bucharest for £8.5million in the summer, but his agent claimed earlier this week that Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho will be prepared to pay a lot of money for the 23-year-old if he impresses over two seasons with Spurs.

And Villas-Boas is understandably unhappy with the comments and admits that he has spoken to Chiriches about the situation and insists Spurs are a big enough club to not be a stepping stone for players to earn moves to other clubs.

He told the Metro: “Obviously the comments are completely disproportionate and out of reality.

“I have spoke to the player, told the player to speak to the agent and we have acted accordingly. We consider ourselves a big club. We’re not a stepping stone to anybody.

“We don’t expect the agent to retract himself because it is not part of his character, but it was completely our of proportion the comments that he made.”

Due to work permit issues, Chiriches is still waiting to make his Premier League debut for Tottenham, but he did feature in Spurs’ 2-0 win over Anzhi in the Europa League on Thursday.
