Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has approached Southampton to assess the availability of Mauricio Pochettino after sacking Tim Sherwood, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Spurs chief wielded his managerial axe just days after the end of the Premier League season after growing frustrated with the man he appointed over the winter to replace Andre Villas-Boas.

Despite Sherwood possessing a decent record since taking the role, Levy is thought to be looking for a boss with more experience and the wherewithal to get the best out of a number of the team’s foreign signings from last year.

Ajax coach Frank de Boer is widely seen as the top target, but now it is understood that an approach for Pochettino has been lodged on the back of his terrific season with the Saints.

Southampton are likely to be far from keen to see their manager walk with top stars such as Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Luke Shaw also wanted by big clubs, but that has not deterred the Londoners.

Spurs are attracted to the Argentine’s Premier League experience and attractive footballing philosophy and are confident that he would be willing to move on for a good offer.

Rubbish– just what we need ! A guy who took over at Southampton with all the current players in situ and finished 8th in the Premiership. A guy who during his tenure at Espanyol lost 70 matches from 150 played over 4 seasons and that equates to 17/18 losses per season. Bottom half finish in Premier League beckons with this standard.Probably the cheapest option but for me De Boer is by far the best candidate!
