Benito could be available for as little as £3million in the summer, and was recommended to the club by former Spurs defender Ramon Vega.
The 20-year-old is a Swiss Under-21 international, and is capable of playing left back or in midfield. Juventus have also been linked with a move for him in recent days.
The left back came through the ranks at Aarau, and was a member of their first team for three years before completing the move to Zurich in 2012.
He could be viewed as the long term replacement for Jan Vertonghen, with some reports suggesting the Belgian may have played his last game for the club.
The Tottenham defender limped out of action with an ankle injury sustained in the recent 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, and is likely to miss the rest of the season.
Vertonghen’s recent dip in form has coincided with the defender being linked to a host of Champions League clubs.
