Leighton Baines (Everton)

Tottenham have joined Manchester United in the race for Leighton Baines.

The Daily Mail are reporting that the Everton defender is on Andre Villas-Boas’ transfer shortlist, as he looks to continue to strengthen his squad.

Baines was the subject of two bids from United in the summer, and David Moyes is expected to return with a fresh bid for the left-back in January. But the Scot could have to fight Tottenham as well as the Toffees for the defender, as AVB plots a winter bid himself.

Moyes is preparing a £15million PLUS Antonio Valencia bid for Baines, whilst Spurs will use the leftovers of Gareth Bale’s £100million transfer out of White Hart Lane. Tottenham allowed Benoit Assou-Ekotto to join QPR on loan in the summer, leaving Danny Rose as the only true left-back at the club.

However, the Everton defender is supposedly unwilling to relocate from the North West, presenting a stumbling block for Tottenham’s Portuguese manager. But Everton are still keen on keeping the England international, and will be reluctant to sell the wing-back at all in January.

Baines has had an excellent start to the season, scoring two stunning free-kicks against West Ham in September, as well as going 6 league games unbeaten under new manager Roberto Martinez.

Would Everton sell Baines? Who needs him more, Spurs or United?
