The Aston Villa forward, who scored his second goal in two games against Liverpool on Saturday, is top of Tim Sherwood’s transfer shortlist.
Sherwood and Daniel Levy know their best chance to sign the forward is in the summer, but are prepared to offer cash PLUS players to complete a deal this month. Any deal is likely to involve £15million.
Spurs were highly linked with Benteke last summer, with the Belgian at one point stating his desire to leave Villa Park. Paul Lambert held on to the 23-year-old then, but could once again be forced to do his best to keep hold of the striker in this transfer window, as well as next summer.
The Belgian has been in poor form this season, scoring just his 6th goal of the Premier League season at Anfield on the weekend, a long way off his tally of 19 at the end of last season’s campaign. But with the World Cup looming, Benteke could be tempted to a move to a top club offering premium service, in an attempt to string some form together ahead of the summer tournament.
However, Spurs are prepared to wait until the summer, as they look to replace Jermain Defoe, who will join Toronto next month.
