The Belgian striker has handed in an official transfer request at Villa Park, causing a frenzy of interest from the Premier League‘s top clubs, although Tottenham are understood to be the favourites for his signature.
Villa have slapped a £25million asking price on the forward, a price that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is not willing to match.
Spurs are looking to engineer a move that would see them pay closer to £20million, and are hoping Villa will be tempted by the offer of one of their players in part-exchange.
One of either Jake Livermore, Scott Parker, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, or Tom Huddlestone will be allowed to leave the club should their offer be accepted by Villa.
Although the feeling is that Paul Lambert is demanding cash only for the 22-year-old striker, who scored an impressive 19 Premier League goals last season.
Benteke has not travelled with the rest of the Villa squad to their pre-season training camp in Germany.
Chelsea are also said to be seriously interested in the forward, although the chance of first team football ahead of next summer’s world cup at White Hart Lane is the Belgian’s preferred choice.
