Tottenham have made Cagliari centre-back Davide Astori one of their top summer targets, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Italian defender is currently thought of as one of Serie A’s best enforcers after establishing himself as a first-team regular at his current club following a difficult spell as a youngster at AC Milan.

A host of Cagliari’s domestic rivals have been sniffing around the Azzurri star, but it is understood that Spurs very keen.

The Londoners have been linked with the 27-year-old on a number of occasions over the course of the past few months, but now it is thought that their interest has become more serious.

Astori is seen as a direct replacement for current star centre-half Jan Vertonghen, who is said to be edging towards a move away from White Hart Lane in search of Champions League football.

The silky defender is valued at around £8m, and despite Tottenham’s managerial uncertainty chairman Daniel levy is rumoured to be willing to push through a swoop.

Astori has made 33 appearances for Cagliari this term, helping them to steer clear of relegation.
