Tottenham Hotspur have rejected Blackburn Rovers' approach to speak to assistant first-team coach Tim Sherwood about their vacant managerial post.

Championship side Rovers have been in the market for a manger ever since Steve Kean quit the position last month, and the Lancashire side have named Sherwood as their preferred candidate.

Blackburn wrote to Spurs earlier this week requesting permission to speak with Sherwood but the Premier League side are determined to keep the former Blackburn captain at White Hart Lane and have refused the Ewood Park club's advances.

Sherwood told London 24: "That’s all they are - just rumours. That’s all I know about it.

“I’ve got a great job where I am. There is nothing to consider. It’s just speculation.”

The 43-year-old coach captained Blackburn to the Premier League title in 1995 and made 246 league appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals, before signing for Tottenham in 1999.

Blackburn, who were relegated from the top-flight last season, are currently ninth in the Championship and are desperate to have someone in place in time for their clash with Derby County on Saturday.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway and former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are also believed to be in the frame, but Rovers chiefs are confident they can convince Sherwood to take the job if they are granted permission to open talks with him.
