Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid)Tottenham are planning a fresh move for Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao once the January transfer window opens, according to reports from The Metro.

Spurs were heavily linked with the Portuguese international over the summer, but were unable to seal a deal before the deadline.

However, Andre Villas-Boas is ready to revive his interest in the New Year as he looks to address his left-back concerns.

Danny Rose – the Lilywhites’ only orthodox left-sided defender – is currently sidelined through injury, leaving Jan Vertonghen filling the position.

The Belgian is a centre-back by trade, and admitted that he is frustrated by having to occupy the void.

“I can play at left-back and I can help the team at times. But everyone knows I am not a left-back,” Vertonghen said.

“Once there are injuries, I’m the first to fill in the gap. Sometimes it’s better if you can play in only one position.”

AVB is keen to secure a new option, and is looking at a loan move for Coentrao.

The 25-year-old has spent much of the new season warming the bench at the Bernabeu, with manager Carlo Ancelotti having made Marcelo his first choice left-back.

Coentrao is thought to be keen to play regularly in the build-up to the World Cup – for which Portugal have a play-off position against Sweden – and could be tempted by regular action at White Hart Lane.
