Spurs have been linked with the burly Belgian for some time, and have been buoyed by his recent decision to submit a transfer request.

Villa know that it’s now unlikely that they will be able to keep hold of their star man, and are willing to do business for £25m.

But, Andre Villas-Boas will open the bidding at £20m, and is hopeful that the Midlanders may opt to lower their valuation in a bid to speed up the process and avoid a summer of uncertainty.

Benteke netted a staggering 19 Premier League goals is his debut season at Villa Park, becoming one of the division’s leading strikers despite playing for a side embroiled a relegation dogfight.

The 22-year-old is said to be desperate to move on in the coming months, as he looks to cement a spot in Belgium’s national side ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Spurs were believed to be looking to make a player-plus-cash offer for Benteke, but it is understood that Villa are not keen to agree to such a deal.

The likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are also believed to be interested, but the powerful centre-forward is said to have made White Hart Lane his first choice destination.

Could Christian Benteke be the missing part of Andre Villas-Boas’ Tottenham jigsaw puzzle?

Getting Benteke, or Soldado for that matter is all good. However, neither of these have a proven track record in the prem. If we can land either of these players for around twenty mill, I feel a cheeky bid for Loic Remy should be considered. At 8mil, he surely is worth a punt.

Why will AVB open up the bidding for Benteke at 20 million — much more than the record Spurs pay-out? For an unproven player with one good season. Could have had Damiao a year ago for that money, with a few million change. Yes, throw in Remy too — must be as good as Benteke and for one third of the cost!
