In a flat and rather uninspiring encounter, Germany emerged victorious from their heavyweight quarter-final encounter with France. A first half header from Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels was enough to settle the contest.
Although many have criticised Didier Deschamps for making changes early enough to chase the game, the main debate on Twitter seemed to centre upon the 45 year old’s team selection. Fans of Arsenal and Liverpool debated the decision to start Mamadou Sakho ahead of Laurent Koscielny.
Predictably, Gunners supporters couldn’t believe Deschamps had chosen to leave their man on the bench.
Sakho starting over Koscielny for France… how exactly? Sakho is awful!

starting sakho in the field and koscielny on the bench, france should be investigated for match fixing.

Koscielny is better than Sakho. Only people who disagree are Liverpool fans or those who just hate Arsenal.

The first sensible thing Lawro’s said all World Cup saying he’d prefer Koscielny over Sakho.

I’m going to say it now, I don’t know why you’d pick Sakho over Koscielny

And rather inevitably, Liverpool fans couldn’t have agreed more with the France manager’s selection.

Even Martin Keown (former Arsenal player) admitted just now on BBC that #FRA‘s defence is missing Sakho. Take that, Koscielny fanboys.

Imagine how bad Koscielny must actually be for a 50% fit Sakho to start ahead of him. Or how good Sakho is. Its hard to say.

Looks like Sakho has picked up a knock again and is subbed off for back up centre back Koscielny.

In any case, it was actually Raphael Varane that was beaten in the air for the match-winning goal.
