West Ham plan move for Sunderland defender

West Ham are plotting a move for Phil Bardsley as Sunderland look set for relegation, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 28-year-old full back is out of contract at the Stadium of Light at the end of the season, and could lead a mass exodus from the club following what looks an inevitable relegation.

The former Manchester United defender has already stalled on signing a new contract with Sunderland, and would be forced to take a 40% pay cut to remain with them in the Championship.

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is hoping he can tempt him to Upton Park with the offer of a lucrative contract and a signing on fee.

Meanwhile, West Brom are the current favourites to sign Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner on a free transfer, whilst fellow midfielders Seb Larsson and Jack Colback could both leave the club on bosman deals at the end of the season.

Sunderland’s 5-1 defeat to Tottenham on Monday night has left them rooted to the bottom of the table, seven points behind 17th placed Norwich City, with two games in hand.
