West Ham Insider have confirmed via the club's official website that a World Cup winning right-back - thought to be former Real Madrid Alvaro Arbeloa - is undergoing a medical at the club ahead of a surprise deadline day transfer.

Arbeloa left Madrid at the end of last season after spending seven trophy-full years at the Bernabeu, where he won a La Liga title, two Champions League titles and two Copa Del Rey trophies, and left to a hero's goodbye from both the club and the fans as they thanked the Spain international for his years of service.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has been searching for reinforcements right-back with Michail Antonio keen to play further up the pitch and young Sam Byram still developing as a Premier League player - so the World Cup and two time European Championship winner would provide plenty of much needed experience on the right flank.

With plenty of Premier League experience also under the Spaniard's belt, having spent three seasons at Liverpool between 2006-2009, we think the 33-year-old could be just the man West Ham need to sure themselves up at the back, and here are five reasons why ...

Lack of Experience

ogbonna

West Ham lack a defender who has experience at the highest level of football on their books.  James Collins and Gabriel Ogbonna do possess some, but not of the calibre of Arbeloa who has won near enough all there is to win in world football with both Real Madrid and Spain.

The Spaniard will provide some much needed nouse to a fresh-faced back line, and is likely to become the father figure to the talented but young Sam Byram who is surely set to be the clubs long term solution at right back.

Short Term Alternative

Byram

As mentioned, the Hammers already possess the potential long term solution to their void at right back in Sam Byram, or potentially but less likely so in Michail Antonio.

It would make little to no sense for Slaven Bilic to move for an expensive right back and force his youngsters out of the squad, when he can recruit a player - and a free agent it must be said - who won the Champions League as soon as last season to help the fill the void as well as help the youngsters develop for the future.

Sign of the Times

Dimitri Payet 2

The move itself is significant in that West Ham are finally now in a position where they can attract players of such high calibre to come to the club.

Their terrific outing last season, the presence of the mythical Dimitri Payet and a new stadium to boot means West Ham are an attractive option for many these days and Arbeloa not only proves that. but adds to it too.

Premier League Experience

Arbeloa

It may have been a decade ago that the former Spain international joined Rafael Benitez at Liverpool, but Arbeloa can still claim to have three solid seasons of Premier League football on his CV upon his move to the Hammers.

The Premier League has changed a lot since then, but it is unlikely the veteran right back will take much time to adjust to physical demands of the league.

Antonio's Move Forward

Antonio

If nothing else, the move for another right-back means England's most recent call up Michail Antonio is able to push forward to the position of right wing - his preferred position and one in which he has thrived during his tenure at West Ham.

The winger is at his best going forward - scoring nine goals last season and starting the new season in the same vein, having notched twice already in the opening three games.

A new right-back and a rejuvenated winger? Win-win.
