Arsenal have moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter, according to the Daily Mirror.

Arsene Wenger sent the Gunners’ chief scout Steve Rowley to watch the recently capped German international in the Bundesliga this weekend.

Wenger is believed to have been tracking the 6ft 3in defender for a number of months, and is now stepping up his interest ahead of a potential summer move.

The 20-year-old made his debut for Germany against Chile, and is expected to go to the World Cup Finals as cover for Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker.

Wenger sees Ginter as a potential future star at the Emirates, although he will likely have to settle for a place on the bench to start with.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move, but Wenger has good relations with Freiburg and considers the Gunners favourites for his signature.

Thomas Vermaelen is likely to leave the Emirates at the end of the season after struggling to break up the partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

That may see Wenger move for two centre backs, with Ginter expected to be a priority signing.

The Gunners are confident of striking a deal for a fee in the region of £8million.
