Arsenal are planning to hijack Newcastle’s bid for Loic Remy, with reports suggesting the Gunners have made preliminary contact with the forward’s agent, according to the Metro.

The Gunners are in desperate need of a striker, and have reportedly sent scouts to run the rule over the 27-year-old, who will be available in the summer once his loan deal at St James’s Park expires.

Newcastle remain desperate to hang onto the Frenchman, but boss Alan Pardew has already admitted he faces a battle to sign him on a permanent deal from QPR.

Back in January, Pardew said: “The plan was always that he would be on loan for the year and we had a deal with QPR that that would be the case.

“We would like to do it permanently but there is a long way until that happens.

“It is not quite as simple as [meeting his release clause] as the player and his agents need to make sure it is right for the player and we have to honour that.”

Remy has been a decent signing for Newcastle this season, with the Frenchman netting 11 times in 22 appearances.

Reports suggest QPR are willing to do business for around £9million in the summer.
