Jack Wilshere has insisted it is vital Arsenal ‘are intelligent and stay in the game’ when Bayern Munich arrive at the Emirates tonight, reports the Guardian.

Pep Guardiola’s side head into the game on a superb run of form, and high on confidence after a dominant display at the Emirates at the same stage of the competition last year.

Wilshere insists the Arsenal players must ensure they have learnt from last years 3-1 defeat at the Emirates, and play a more intelligent game.

“We have spoken about the importance of staying in the game,” the England midfielder said. “Even if it is 0-0, it is a good chance to qualify as the away goal is massive. We have got to be a bit more intelligent this year and stay in the game.”

For Arsene Wenger, it is a chance to show how far his team has come in a year, after last years clash almost derailed the Gunners season.

Wenger found himself perhaps under the most pressure of his entire Arsenal reign at this point last season, following the 3-1 defeat to the eventual European champions, and the humiliating FA Cup exit the hands of Blackburn just a few days before.

We were too nervous at the beginning of the game [against Bayern last season],” Wenger said, with a hint towards the Blackburn defeat. “We also wanted to level it too much at 2–1 and we conceded the third through a counter. It’ll be down to our defending on Wednesday. Their main force is going forward. They have five or six players who can create a chance at any moment.”
