Ex-Arsenal defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst believes that Arsene Wenger has assembled a squad capable of winning the Premier League this season.

The north London side topped the table for the longest period of time of any team during 2013/14, but a dip in form after Christmas saw them slide away from eventual Champions Manchester City as well as Liverpool and Chelsea.

But during the transfer window just gone, the Gunners invested heavily in their first-team, with Alexis Sanchez’s £35m switch from Barcelona accompanied by big money moves for Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers.

Danny Welbeck’s capture capped a good few months for Arsenal as he completed a £16m transfer from Manchester United on deadline day, and van Bronckhorst – who won the title in the red and white shirt during 2002 – believes that his old club have the strength and depth to finish top of the pile in 2015:

“Arsenal have a good enough squad to win the Premier League title,” he told talkSPORT. “They are one of the teams who are capable [of winning the league]. It’s a major boost for Arsene, and for all involved, to be in the Champions League.

“The experience of the German players, who became world champions this summer, is also good for the team.

“Danny Welbeck wasn’t in Man United’s plans but he’s a very talented striker. He’s very experienced and has played for England a few times. Arsenal’s squad is big and very talented.”
