Arsenal braced for Wolfsburg bid
Mertesacker has enjoyed a lengthy run in the Gunners first team this season but has come under heavy criticism on a weekly basis from supporters.
The German international is still seen as one of the best defenders in Europe by many in his native country and Wolfsburg appear to be the first team to attempt to bring the 28 year old back home.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has selected Mertesacker ahead of Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen at times this season but it is likely that at least one central defender will be on his summer shopping list.
Mertesacker will not want to play second fiddle at the Emirates as he did last season and so a move back to the Bundesliga could suit all parties.
Arsenal are reportedly keen on bringing in Swansea City captain Ashley Williams at the end of the season.
