Arsenal target Maxime Gonalons has fuelled talk of a move to Serie A, reports talkSPORT.

The 25-year-old was thought to have rejected a move to Napoli in January, and Arsenal were hoping to take advantage and bring the midfielder to the Premier League.

Lyon are struggling with financial issues, and president Jean-Michel Aulas could be forced to sell Gonalons in the summer to raise funds. But the Frenchman has dealt the Gunners a blow by claiming he didn’t turn down the Naples club, and is open to moving to Italy in the summer: “I never rejected Napoli. In that operation, the final word belong to Aulas. The door remains open, however – my agent regularly speaks with [Napoli’s sporting director Riccardo] Bigon.”

Wenger has been monitoring Gonalons for the last few seasons, with rumours circulating last summer that the Gunners boss would move for the midfielder. Wenger may find himself regretting not making a move for Gonalons however, with former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez ready to sign up the 25-year-old.

Napoli are currently 2nd in Serie A, in Benitez’s first year in charge. And Gonalons could be another addition to his squad, as he looks to stop Juventus’ dominance in the Italian league.
