Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen has had an anti-inflammatory injection in his ankle in order to try to avoid surgery, The Daily Mail reports.

The 26-year-old, who has already had an ankle injection this season, now faces a race to be fit for the Gunners’ Champions League match against Bayern Munich a week Tuesday.

With Kieran Gibbs injuried, Andre Santos being loaned to Brazilian Gremio and Nacho Monreal cup tied, the Belgian’s recovery seems key to Arsenal’s aspiration against the Bundesliga leaders.

Vermaelen, who missed Saturday’s win against Sunderland, will get back to light training this week in the hope of making it for the last sixteen European round.

The good news for Arsene Wenger is that midfielder Jack Wilshere and defender Laurent Koscielny are likely to be fit to face the Germans.

Wilshere suffered a thigh injury in Saturday’s game, but he could even be ready for this weekend’s FA Cup match against Blackburn. However, Wenger could give the 21-year-old a rest so that he is in perfect condition to feature in the Champions League.

As for Koscielny, the calf injury suffered with the French national team does not seem serious, and it should be a matter of days before the defender is available again.
