Arsene Wenger was right to opt against bringing former captain Cesc Fabregas back to Arsenal over the summer, according to Gunners idol Alan Smith.

The Spaniard left Barcelona to sign for Chelsea ahead of the World Cup, but many reports suggested that the north Londoners passed on the opportunity to bring back their old skipper, with a first option having been inserted into the deal that took him to the Camp Nou back in 2011.

Calls from some sections of fans at the Emirates Stadium to get Fabregas fell on deaf ears, and criticism has surfaced this week after his stunning Blues Premier League debut against Burnley on Monday.

Even though the 27-year-old is a hero at Arsenal and has won top prizes at both club and international level, Smith says that he understands just why Wenger didn’t bring him back to the club with a holding midfielder to replace Mikel Arteta what is really needed:

“As a holding midfielder, I don’t think he [Arteta] has got the legs anymore and I don’t think he is naturally that kind of player.” He told talkSPORT.

“Fabregas isn’t that type of player either, so I can understand why Wenger turned down the chance to bring him back. He has got a lot of players in that position of that type.”

Smith went on to say that he believed Wenger would sign an enforcer in the current window, but with a lack of action he expects the injury-prone Abou Diaby to be given another chance:

“I thought Wenger might have gone out and got somebody. Whether he is waiting for Abou Diaby to finally come good, I don’t know, but it could be a problem over the season for Arsenal.”

If you watch his 57 goals for arsenal you will know why we should have, without any shadow of doubt, resigned him. Runs from midfield beyond the strikers, long range efforts, left and right foot goals, penalties and headers. There’s nothing left! And then ad his assists. I’m sorry, but this is one the prof got very wrong. If we were serious. Ozil, fabregas with Ramsey helping out! Porn jack and thank santi for his efforts and let him go home. We would still need 2 good strikers and an enforcer. But that is how we would be taken seriously and we may even have a team to take on those slightly bigger than besiktas!
