Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown says that he is not surprised that his old club have passed on the opportunity to bring Cesc Fabregas back this summer.

The ex-Gunners captain appears to be on the verge of sealing a move to Chelsea after being deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp, but the Gunners were given first refusal due to a clause in the deal that took him to Spain in 2011.

Despite Fabregas’ qualities and experience, Arsene Wenger opted against a £30m deal for the 27-year-old, in a move that left many surprised given his ties to the club.

But Keown says that he was not at all shocked by the decision, with the playmaker not the type of player his old side are crying out for:

“I’m not surprised,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.

“After Fabregas left, Arsene had to invest time in someone else and he doesn’t want to block their path if Fabregas comes back.

“Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is someone who can play in that central midfield position as well as Jack Wilshere of course.

“Wenger probably feels he’s more than catered for in that attacking midfield area – it’s a defensive midfielder that’s going to be more purposeful in that Arsenal squad now.”

Keown went on to say the money would be better spent on a striker:

“I do believe Fabregas would improve any team in the world so of course, he deserves special consideration but there are only so many £30m players you can buy every summer,

“Arsene Wenger has just signed a new three-year contract and I’m not sure he’ll be signing another one so he might think if he’s going to spend £30m, he would prefer it to be on a centre forward than another midfielder.”
