Former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre believes that his old club have made a mistake in signing Alexis Sanchez.

The Gunners fought off serious interest from rivals Liverpool to land the Chilean in a £35m deal, which has been hailed by some as one of the best buys of the summer so far.

The 25-year-old was offloaded by Barcelona following the arrival of Luis Suarez, but his form over last season and through the World Cup was impressive.

Sanchez will be battling with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and many others for an attacking midfield berth at the Emirates Stadium, and Silvestre thinks that his old boss has made the wrong move in bringing him to north London:

“Arsenal have already got that type of player,” he told Goal.

“Quick, sharp, fast – they have enough of them already in Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.

“Sanchez could have gone anywhere after his tremendous World Cup but I do not think he is the type of player the club need right now.”

Silvestre played for Arsenal from 2008 to 2010 and is currently without a club after being released by MLS outfit Portland Timbers in January.

If there’s a mistake arsenal made was once signing m. sylvester himself, was a total liability.

This mug played most his days for manure and was one of AW’s most ridiculous signings! He was someone who’d get skinned by a player of sanchez’s quality. Lucky to have retired with the medals he has
