Former Arsenal captain Frank McLintock believes that defeat in this weekend’s FA Cup Final against Hull may force Arsene Wenger to consider his future at the club.

The Gunners could end their nine-year wait for a major trophy at Wembley on Saturday evening, and are considered as heavy favourites to beat Steve Bruce’s Premier League strugglers.

Wenger himself is yet to sign a new contract in north London, which has put his future in serious doubt as his current deal expires in just a few months’ time.

Speculation has suggested in recent weeks that the Frenchman will extend his lengthy stay at the club, but as of yet there is no official agreement in place.

McLintock – who captained Arsenal during defeat in the 1972 FA Cup final at the hands of Leeds – believes that his old side must lift the trophy this time, and that if they don’t Wenger may opt to walk away from the Emirates Stadium:

“It’s vital Arsenal win the FA Cup,” he told talkSPORT. “If you look at their record over the last nine years, they haven’t done anything. It will be great for the morale of the team.

“Any team that has gone a long time without winning anything, as soon as they do, it makes them get better and better.

“I think he will sign a new deal,

“There is a possibility he won’t though if Arsenal don’t win the FA Cup. If they get beat he might have second thoughts.”
