Niall Quinn has called on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to delve into the transfer market to sign a replacement for striker injured Olivier Giroud.

The French forward limped off at the end of the Gunners’ 2-2 draw at Everton after netting the equaliser late on.

Although the extent of the problem is not fully known, it’s expected that Giroud’s troublesome ankle could keep him out for up to three months, leaving the Londoners short on cover.

Rookie forward Yaya Sanogo – who is yet to score a league goal for Arsenal – is the only real back-up option, with Alexis Sanchez and Lukas Podolski not orthodox lone strikers.

Quinn – who started his senior career with the club – believes that Giroud’s presence will be sorely missed, and that Wenger must push ahead with any plans to get a replacement in before the looming transfer deadline passes:

“Giroud is a very, very important player,” he told talkSPORT.

“Away from home especially, I love the way he battles for them. He has done so now since he came to the club.

“[Alexis] Sanchez is flexible and can play up there but there is a big need for somebody to make a presence in Giroud’s absence and where are they going to get him now at this stage?

“They will have people on their minds even though they didn’t know Giroud would get injured, but it will be important that they click something into gear in the next few days.”
