Former Arsenal captain Frank McLintock believes that his old club are three top signings away from making a genuine push for the Premier League title.

The Gunners led the way for longer than any other side last term, but their early season form dipped after the winter period, which saw them lose ground and slip into a battle for fourth spot – although they did end the campaign by winning the FA Cup.

Since then Arsene Wenger has delved into the transfer market to address concerns, with four new faces now at the Emirates Stadium.

Chilean ace Alexis Sanchez is the headline grabber, but the Frenchman has also snapped up David Ospina to provide solidity in goal while adding both Callum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy to cover the right side of his backline.

But the Londoners have also lost players, with Thomas Vermaelen – the club’s relatively unused skipper – looking set to be the next out of the door.

McLintock – who captained Arsenal to the double in 1971 – feels that his old team are still three top quality signings away from regaining their Premier League crown:

“Arsenal need three more players to be serious Premier League title contenders,” he told talkSPORT. “They need a centre-half, especially if Thomas Vermaelen is going, a big central midfielder and a centre forward.

“They were in a prime position last year to push on and win it [the title]. Giroud scored 22 goals last season, which is not bad at all, but he’s not a top centre forward. He did a good job but he was exhausted towards the end of the season. Yaya Sanogo, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott are not centre forwards.

“We also need a big central midfielder. There’s a lack of height in Arsenal’s team and they always seem vulnerable at free-kicks and corners. Arsenal need a big Patrick Vieira type.”
