England boss Roy Hodgson believes that Danny Welbeck has made the right call to leave Manchester United for Arsenal.

The versatile attacker completed a late switch from his boyhood club to the Gunners yesterday after it became apparent that he was no longer wanted at Old Trafford.

Arsene Wenger sanctioned the £16m raid for the England international, whom is able to play as a centre-forward, where he could cover for the injured Olivier Giroud, or on either flank.

Welbeck is currently a part of the Three Lions’ squad as they gear up for their friendly with Norway, and Hodgson is happy to see his forward moving to Arsenal:

“The biggest bonus is for Danny Welbeck. When you are a player of his calibre and find yourself at United with competition for places, you don’t always get the starts you would like.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“He is going to a club where he will hopefully get more starts and playing time.

“It is not easy for players playing a small part in club games, then coming and playing 90 minutes for England in intense surroundings.

“So I am pleased for Danny and I think Arsenal have signed a good player.”

Hodgson went on to hint that the switch may help Welbeck to stay in his England set-up:

“My job is with England and the players I choose. I don’t wish to make any suggestions about what clubs do with their players. But I cannot deny the more players play and the more experience they get, especially at Champions League level, the better it is for me at international level.”
