Arsenal have sent their chief transfer negotiator Dick Law to Germany to open talks over a January move for Schalke star Julian Draxler, according to the Guardian.

The Gunners are more likely to sign the attacking midfielder in the summer, but Law’s attendance in Germany shows the club’s desire to complete the deal before Friday’s deadline.

Draxler’s contract contains a £37million buy-out-clause, although Arsenal are unwilling to pay the full amount, believing the figure is too excessive for a 20-year-old.

Arsenal remain confident of striking a deal with the German club that would see them pay a figure below the release clause, although whether it can be agreed before Friday’s deadline remains to be seen.

Draxler plays primarily as a left-sided attacker, but is capable of playing on either flank or just behind the striker.

Arsene Wenger has plenty of options in that area, although he does have injury concerns, with Theo Walcott set to miss the remainder of the season with a cruciate knee ligament rupture.

Aaron Ramsey has also suffered a set back in his rehabilitation from a thigh strain, while Wenger was also without the injured Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky for the 2-2 draw with Southampton on Tuesday night.

Draxler has been injured with an ankle problem since December, but hopes to return to full fitness next month.
