Arsenal will not be re-signing Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona this summer after they informed that Catalans they won’t activate the buy-back clause for their old captain, according to reports from BBC Sport.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a swoop for the playmaker in recent weeks amid talk that he is no longer needed at the Nou Camp.

The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have also been alligned with Fabregas, but Arsenal have been tipped as favourites due to a clause they had put in the deal that took him to Barca from London in 2011.

Arsene Wenger could have snapped up the World Cup winner for close to £30m and looked to be in pole position to do so with the player himself keen on the deal.

However the Frenchman has informed the La Liga side that a transfer does not interest them.

Wenger is instead after a creative midfielder and a holding central player, and cannot afford the two as well as Fabregas.

Chelsea are now the side seen as most likely to land the 27-year-old, with reports indicating that they’re willing to hand him a £200,000-per-week contract.
