Everton's Marouane Fellaini

Arsenal are reluctant to pay Marouane Fellaini’s £23million price tag, reports the Metro.

The Everton midfielder has been heavily linked with the Gunners, and it was expected that Arsene Wenger would trigger the Belgian’s release clause.

But the Frenchman is now unsure whether he wants to break the club’s transfer record for Fellaini. Everton have insisted that they will not accept any offer under the release clause price.

Wenger had suggested that he will be spending big this summer, after the club once again secured Champions League football next season, after beating Newcastle on the final day of the season.

But the 63-year-old doesn’t seem convinced by the Belgian’s worth, opening the door for Manchester United, who have been linked with Fellaini ever since David Moyes, his former manager, took over at Old Trafford.

Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis spoke out about Wenger’s rumoured spending spree this summer, and said: “He is not scared to spend money, but he has to believe he is a getting a top-class player.”

The 25-year-old was Everton’s top scorer in the Premier League this season, finishing the campaign with 11 goals to his name.

Arsenal have also been linked with Gonzalo Higuain and Wayne Rooney, as Arsene Wenger attempts to strengthen his squad.

Would Fellaini be a good fit for the Gunners? Should Wenger sign him quickly?

If true this story is typical wenger. He may have £70 million to spend, but he has in his head a maximum value limit for any prospective signing. Each and every transfer turns into a saga as he tries negotiate a lower price with the selling club. Gooners should be patient and not expect too much if the club is linked with a top player. Wenger likes to buy lesser known players he can develop and of course they cost less.

He’s well worth that fee- he’d cost at least £30m if not for the buy-out clause. I don’t see the holdup in this deal – at the risk of being cynical, Fellaini is only 25 so Wenger can get a few years out of him and them sell him for a profit in the future. Unfortunately (see: Juan Mata), Wenger’s mindset is if a player costs £23m, but he only values him at £22.5m, it’s no deal.

Why do you keep dangling yourselves on a piece of string.. unless Wenger can buy a player at a cut down price, he will not..he loves to be told how great he is at economy..dont hold your breath..then you will be told they are not available..but best of luck..it will be needed. Maybe players for the future, heard it before..

Why if we are supposed to have £70 m to spend and transfer fees no object are we baulking at the £23m buy out clause for Fellini? I don’t believe that Wenger will actually bring in anyone, other clubs have identified their targets and have gone for them but no Wenger will leave it as usual to the last minute then say “I tried to get this player and that player but ……”

I am absolutely disgusted that a player of this quality wants to come to Arsenal yet our boss is not interested. He is obviously going senile. I don’t trust him anymore and if we miss out on Fellaini and Higuain then SACK HIM , simple as that

I DO NOT THINK WENGER WILL BUY FELLAINI. HE IS INTERESTED IN THE LIKES OF GERVINHO, SANOGO, CHAMAKH ETC AND NOT THE CLASS OF FELLAINI

If Wenger doesn’t sign Fellani, Arsenal Football Club Board should immediately fire him. Fellani is just the kind of player you need in the middle of Arsenal’s Midfield. He physical, tactical, technical and very creative. Sign Maroune Fellani for us ooooohhhh!
