Arsenal are ready to step up their pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin in an attempt to beat bitter rivals Tottenham to the Southampton star, according to reports from Goal.

The France international looks set to be the latest in a long list of Saints players to move on this summer, with Dejan Lovren set to leave following the exits of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Luke Shaw.

Schneiderlin is mooted to be both Spurs’ and Arsenal’s top target for the remainder of the transfer window, and the latter are ready to pull out all of the stops to get him to the red half of north London.

Arsene Wenger is prepared to sanction a lucrative contract offer for the 24-year-old, which the club hope will be enough to ensure that the lure of working under his former coach Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane is not too much to a pull.

Southampton are holding out for around £18m for their man, but Arsenal may be able to negotiate a lower fee in the player himself makes it clear that he wants out of St Mary’s Stadium.

Arsenal can forget about signing Schneiderlin not because the player has a `special relationship` with his former manager; surely the lure of the CL must trump that, but because Wenger won`t pay the wonga required, especially if the Chambers deal comes off.
