Joel Campbell was left frustrated by Arsene Wenger’s decision to block his loan move to Benfica from Arsenal on transfer deadline day, according to his agent.

The Costa Rican forward returned to the Emirates Stadium over the summer on the back of a fine season at Olympiakos and an impressive World Cup, and was tipped to become a key Gunners squad member.

Despite being given chances during pre-season, Campbell has been handed only 16 minutes of action in competitive games, which led to talk of a fourth loan move in four seasons for the 22-year-old.

Benfica pushed hard to get a deal over the line before the deadline passed, but Wenger eventually blocked the switch in favour of keeping the youngster in London.

And the player’s agent, Joaquim Batica, says that he and his client were left baffled by the Frenchman’s decision:

“Benfica fought until the last minute to sign Campbell but the move didn’t happen because, in the last hour, Arsenal decided to keep him,” he is quoted by Goal.

“Wenger says he did not want to sell him. But if he is not in his plans, then why not allow him to leave?”
