Mesut Ozil was given an extended break by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, in a bid to help the German playmaker recharge his batteries, reports the Daily Mirror.

The Gunners club record signing was allowed to return to Germany last week, after a disappointing performance in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, in which he had a tame penalty saved by Manuel Neuer.

The midfielder was allowed to return to his homeland to visit family and friends, and is set to return to Arsenal’s training headquarters on Tuesday.

He hopes to be fit for Saturday’s trip to Stoke, having missed last weekends 4-1 win over Sunderland with a dead leg sustained in the defeat to Bayern Munich.

Wenger rarely gives his squad time off during such a busy part of the season, but has acknowledged Ozil has been pushed to his limit in recent weeks, and has looked tired and jaded.

Meanwhile, Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey is targeting the north London derby clash with Tottenham on March 16 as a potential comeback.

The Welshman has been out since Christmas with a thigh injury, but Wenger hopes to have him back for the crucial run in  as Arsenal chase the Premier League title and the FA Cup.
