Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere believes that his side can mount a genuine title challenge when the new season starts after beating champions Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield.

The Gunners led the way for longer than any other side last term, but eventually slipped away from the Sky Blues, Liverpool and Chelsea after the winter period – although they did go on to lift the FC Cup.

Since then Arsene Wenger has spent big to land the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Callum Chambers and David Ospina, which has led to talk of a push for English football’s top prize.

Wilshere knows that the result in the game at Wembley yesterday – in which both teams had a number of key players missing – will not correlate directly to where the league trophy goes, but he believes that Arsenal have sent out a clear message:

“We’ve just completed our pre-season and we’ve done it in style,” he told talkSPORT.

“We beat the champions of England [in the Community Shield] and I know it doesn’t mean we’re going to be champions [this season] but we’ve put down a marker and we’ve shown we’re ready [to challenge].”
