Arsenal are set to up their interest in Olympiakos striker Kostas Mitroglou ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Greek international has been in razor-sharp form for both club and country so far this term, netting 14 league goals and scoring during his national side’s World Cup play-off victory over Romania.

His electric performances have alerted interest from across the continent, with Liverpool believed to be one of the sides taking a keen interest in his performances.

But Arsene Wenger is ready to beat his domestic rivals to Mitroglou once the transfer window re-opens.

The Frenchman is desperate to land an alternative to Olivier Giroud, with the in-form forward the Gunners’ only top-class central striker.

Olympiakos value their man at around £8m, and may be forced to sell quickly due to the financial problems currently gripping Greek football.

Wenger has been credited with an interest in Mitroglou for some time, and recently admitted that he is on his radar:

“He is a true finisher but he must try to evolve to a higher level. In any case, all the major European clubs will certainly be alert. We cannot neglect him.”
