Arsenal transfer news: Wenger on the trail of City super sub
Arsene Wenger has announced that his team are still not out of the title race, despite trailing eleven points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United, but the Frenchman needs to bolster his squad if they are to challenge the likes of United, Chelsea and Manchester City.
The Arsenal boss has outlined the three areas that need immediate improvement; Goalkeeper, out wide and most importantly up front.
Olivier Giroud has started to hit the form that earned him his transfer to the Emirates, but considering the former Montpellier striker was fifth in the Premier League’s Shots On Target table before yesterday’s games with just a three goal return, suggests the striker is lacking the lethality in front of goal that Wenger requires.
It is believed that disgruntled Citizens striker Edin Dzeko will top the French manager’s wish list. The Bosnian forward has scored six goals in the Premier League this season but has been used as a substitute on the most-part by City boss Roberto Mancini.
Dzeko netted twice during Man City’s late come-back against West Brom, and provided the decider against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday afternoon, coming off the bench in both fixtures.
Roberto Mancini has revealed his striker is unhappy being the City super sub.
“He [Dzeko] is not happy. A player who is happy on the bench does not exist,” the Italian coach told BBC Sport.
Dzeko himself told reporters after Sunday’s game: “The goals are my message. That’s the only thing.”
It is unknown whether Wenger will break the habit of a life-time and splash the cash on the Bosnian international, who has scored five goals for his country this season.
Considering Man City spent £27million on bringing Dzeko to the Premier League and the towering centre forward offers Mancini some variation from the likes of Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli, it is unlikely City will want to part company with their super sub without a huge fee involved.
Other potential transfer targets for the Gunners include Spanish international Fernando Llorente, English hot prospect Wilfried Zaha, Edinson Cavani – who scored four goals for Napoli in midweek – and Atletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez.
