Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has cast doubt over whether he will sign a new contract at Arsenal, after refusing to discuss his future until the conclusion of the Champions League group phase, according to the Daily Mail.

Although the Gunners remain confident Wenger will sign an extension to his current deal – which sees the Frenchman pocket £7.5million a year – he has yet to commit.

Wenger – who turns 64 next month – claims he does not want his contract discussions to act as a distraction as his team faces an important run of fixtures.

The Gunners take on Borussia Dortmund in a crucial Champions League group game tomorrow evening, before travelling to Old Trafford on Sunday as league leaders to take on the reigning champions.

Arsenal then have two more tough Champions League games to play which will determine whether they make it out of this year’s ‘group of death’, with Marseille set to come to the Emirates before a testing trip to Napoli.

Wenger is expected to wait until the conclusion of the Champions League group phase before making a decision on his future.

Both parties seem relaxed about the situation, with owner Stan Kroenke and chief executive Ivan Gazidis both confident Wenger’s future is with Arsenal.

Former Arsenal chairman David Dein claimed the club was his ‘life work’ before being fired in 2007, and the Frenchman has turned down numerous opportunities to manage other clubs in recent times, including the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and most recently Paris St Germain.
