Thomas Vermaelen has told Arsenal he wants to quit the club in the summer, according to the players agent, writes the Metro.

The Belgian has found first team football hard to come by at the Emirates this season, with Wenger preferring the defensive pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

He was linked with a January move away in order to get regular action ahead of the summer’s World Cup, but ended up staying put.

But now it seems he has told Arsene Wenger he wants out at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old’s agent Alex Kroes told Le10 Sport: “Thomas has told Wenger that he wants to leave Arsenal this summer.”

However, Kroes revealed the defender – who is currently injured – has not agreed a deal to join Rafael Benitez at Napoli.

“Are the stories true? What you’ve read in the newspapers and on the internet is unfounded,” Kroes told Ultime Calcio Napoli.

“Things that have been reported are not true, and I say this with full knowledge of the facts. Some outlets are beginning to speculate, but that’s all it is – speculation.

“Now is not the time to talk.”
