Former Chelsea attacker Salomon Kalou has claimed that he turned down a late January loan move to Arsenal.

The Ivory Coast star left the Blues in 2012 to join Lille in Ligue 1, ending a successful spell in West London during which time he helped them to win the Premier League and Champions League.

Despite having only been with his current club for a short amount of time, Kalou has been consistently linked with a return to England, with Arsenal having mooted as a likely destination.

Now it has emerged that the Gunners tried to land the 28-year-old over the winter, but he opted against making the move:

“A loan deal could have been done at the last minute,” he is quoted by ESPN.

“However, I want to finish third [in Ligue 1], prepare for the World Cup and go to the Stade de France to compete in the Coupe de France final.”

Kalou has also been linked with Liverpool, and is believed to have a release clause in his contract worth around £3m.

Arsenal did eventually land a loan signing in January, as Arsene Wenger moved to snap up experienced Swede Kim Kallstrom from Spartak Moscow.
